Common Questions We Receive from Students About Classes
1. How do you locate Writing Intensive courses?
Writing Intensive courses do not appear on Degreeworks. Instead, to locate these courses, log onto Schedule Builder in your CUNYfirst account. Select the Advance Search option in the search box. Be sure to specify undergraduate under Academic Career. For Course Attribute, choose Writing Intensive. Selecting search will provide a list of potential options within various departments to fulfill Hunter’s Writing Intensive requirement. However, please note that this function operates as a word search. The system is locating the keyword “Writing Intensive.” Some classes may pop up but are not Writing Intensive. To distinguish which course is Writing Intensive, head back to Schedule Results and pull up Class Details. Under Course Attributes for the course, it will specify if the course is Writing Intense or not.
2. My minor section on Degreeworks says “See Advisor.” How can I view my minor requirements for class registration?
You can schedule an appointment with your minor advisor or your primary advisor to discuss requirements. You can also use the What-If Function on Degreeworks to view your minor requirements. It will then indicate if the classes taken are being completed towards your minor.
3. How can I figure out what prerequisite I need for a course?
When selecting a course in Schedule Builder, prerequisites will be listed under Class Details. You may also use the Hunter College Catalog. On the Catalog, you can plug in the course code and read up on any requirements for the course, including grade requirement to progress in the subject and prerequisites/corequisites.
4. What is Focus Study?
A Focus Study is a Concentration Study that ranges from 0-12 credits depending on the number of credits in a foreign language a student has remaining. In other words, if exempted from a foreign language and there are still credits remaining for the Hunter Focus section, you will have to complete those remaining credits with a Focus Study not related to your major. You can declare your Focus Study on the eDeclare form on Hunter’s website.
5. How can I drop my classes?
Dropping a class is similar to enrolling into a class; however, instead, you would click the trash icon button on Schedule Builder before proceeding with the process of getting the new updated schedule. Keep in mind class drop periods by referring to the academic calendar. The time in which you drop will determine potential refunds as well as if the dropping of the course will appear on your transcript.
